Today’s travels…
Published June 20th, 2006 in Local SpotlightThe radishes and strawberries are from the Dewitt Park Tuesday farmer’s market. I must say that I paid much less for the Schuyler strawberries than I did here, but they are equally as tasty. I seem to not be able to go to the farmer’s market without coming away with some sort of radish.
The cookies are snickerdoodles from Ithaca Bakery. It’s been too hot (although today is nice) to think about turning the oven on. I kind of feel silly buying snickerdoodles since I make them quite a bit, but again, too hot. I think mine are better, although these will do just fine. IB is a good place, but Ithaca is really lacking in places like Harrison and Columbus and all the other good places that Syracuse has. I think Jennifer and I need to do a Syracuse bakery tour someday!
The Swiss chard is from Wegmans. Actually, I got that last night as I couldn’t resist the bright orange stalks. It’s actually from a local farm, though. They have displays set up at the front of the produce section with local produce, most of it organic.
The tomatoes and blueberries are from Ludgate Farms. Both are locally grown, although they did have other tomatoes that were larger, but from Canada and elsewhere. Ludgate Farms is a bit out of the way, up on Hanshaw Road, but it’s a worthwhile trip. I found lavender there, which I haven’t found elsewhere. They also carry Heidelberg bread (as does Greenstar), a full range of New Hope Mills flours and cornmeal, and many many other things. A raisin and hazelnut Ritter Sport may have jumped into my bag as well.
I also got a new oven thermometer as I just noticed that the resting position on the old one was 150 degrees. This explains some of the issues I’ve been having with things not cooking properly in there.
